Established as a place where land owners of the erstwhile county of California got a chance to graze their cattle and livestock, Bellflower has come a long way since its inception in 1784. Firstly set up under the Spanish rule, the city has undergone quite a number of transitions. From the Spaniards, the city went to the Mexicans and finally, the Americans, as it now stands.
The economy and population of the town has relied upon livestock and cattle products for centuries. There was a time when the prices of beef and livestock products were comparable to that of salt, with the salt being more expensive at times.
The "Rancho" life, which was a trademark of the Mexican revolution consequently ended with time. Natural disasters, taking place one after the other, led to a gradual decrease in the number of cattle and livestock that the town boasted of. People from nearby areas started using Bellflower as a hunting ground and as a spot for fishing- thanks to an abundance of geese, ducks and a number of fish varieties.
"Bellflower", as a town actually came into existence much later than 1784. It was in 1869, to be precise, when a ranch- The Somerset Ranch- stretching across 4,000 acres, came to be known as the city of Bellflower. This 4,000 acre area was used considerably for gazing jersey and dairy cows, giving a new impetus and boost to the economy and population of Bellflower.
Bellflower, as established in 1869, was in a close vicinity to San Gabriel (also known as the 'Tramp River') and flash floods and sudden surges in the water level were common. Thanks to the surging waters of the Tramp River, Bellflower soon came to be known all over the country for open spaces, rich fertile lands and the way in which the river would replenish the soil's resources every couple of years.
A large population started settling on the banks of the river in the so called "River Colony" and that is the main turning point in the history of Bellflower. Consequently, a number of dams and bridges were made across the river, which now prevent it from flooding. A number of other organizations and associations were set up at Bellflower, with the Pacific Electric Rail entering the city in the earlier half of the 20th century.
With the city being connected to Los Angeles, property and raw labor force was open to the employers sitting in LA and Bellflower came to the limelight all of a sudden. This led to a surge in population and an upliftment in the general standard of life of the people of Bellflower, who have now graduated from farmers and cattle gazers to executives and officers in some of the best firms of the world.
